On June 1st, 2014, one specimen of the rove beetle Sepedophilus bipustulatus was discovered on the island Reißinsel near Mannheim-Neckarau in the detritus of an old willow. It can be distinguished from its similar sister species by the very short elytra. In Germany, the species is very rare and is regarded as critically endangered (RL 1). On June 2nd, 2012, one specimen of the rove beetle Philonthus rufimanus was observed in the edge of a quarry pond near Breisach. With its red front and middle legs and the shiny blue elytra the species is very conspicuous. It prefers sandy-rubbly edges of rivers and creeks and lives in the rubble layer. The stenotopic species is known to occur in Southern and the warm parts of Central Europe, but scattered and has disappeared from many former locations. In Germany, the only recent records are from Baden, Hesse and Northrhine. P. rufimanus is regarded as critically endangered (RL 1).

On May 8th, 2010 two specimens of Emus hirtus were discovered in the forest 'Bienwald' near Scheibenhardt on a fresh dunghill (cow dung). E. hirtus is among the largest and most attractive rove beetles (family Staphylinidae) of our fauna. The species can be found on fresh cow dung, where both the adults and their larvae prey on fly maggots. E. hirtus is widespread in Germany, but rarely found, and is regarded as endangered (RL 2).

On August 12th, 2009 two specimens of the rove beetle Siagonium quadricorne were observed in the forest 'Bössinger Wald' near Zeutern (Kraichgau). The species is occasionally found under the bark of old deciduous trees, often gregarious. The males exhibit cheeks prolonged to protruding horns. In Germany, Siagonium quadricorne is regarded as vulnerable (RL 3).

First record of Acylophorus glaberrimus in the forest 'Bienwald' (Rhineland-Palatinate)
Acylophorus glaberrimus
3 Like
On June 28th, 2009, two specimens of the rove beetle Acylophorus glaberrimus were discovered at a small pond near Minfeld (Rhineland-Palatinate). The species is 6–7 mm long and displays very characteristic geniculate antennae. It can be distinguished from the closely related A. wagenschieberi by its shorter scape, reddish knees and feet and red fifth tergite. In Germany, Acylophorus glaberrimus is recorded from several regions and is classified as vulnerable (RL 3). The present discovery constitutes the first record for the Palatinate.
